You see all those wonderful yellow lines? Those are roads that are not paved. Either gravel or dirt and they are public. Some are only a few miles long but others like the one below are hundreds of miles long.

Kinja'd!!!

What I love about this website is when you click on a route you see the elevation change and the other valuable information. The website appears to be made by Mountian bikes but it serves a purpose for anyone wanting to find routes near by or thousands of miles away that are unpaved. The website appears to be community based so anyone who has info to add I’m sure the contribution would be welcome!

AH! I love it! I’ve been wanting something like this for years! Granted its only one more tool in the toolkit, but I like it!

oh Utah...

Kinja'd!!!

Not a complete map I would say but that skyline drive route sure looks tempting (although there is a lot of pavement on that “gravel only” line down the middle...I know)

Neat, there’s still a lot missing though. I checked the few roads I know are dirt and public and they’re not on there. Probably because the people that know what roads are dirt/live there and the people who are “connected” isn’t a largely overlapping group here. I was going to add them, but didn’t feel like signing up yet, maybe later.

I’m excited I am just getting into it and having something like this will be incredibly helpful in a state like Ohio where dirt/gravel roads are harder to find.

I am not sure how reliable the map is but I am hoping if a road usually says it is unpaved on this map then it will actually be unpaved.

This is the map service I’ve been waiting for.

Still seems a little limited, but its a great place to start and a fun way to explore new areas.

I think something like this will be very helpful for planning out trips

This is pretty cool but I was confused at first because in my area there are a ton of gravel roads not labeled, and some tar roads that are labeled as gravel. After reading more on their site it’s a user submitted database of gravel or mostly gravel routes that people usually mountain bike on and find enjoyable, which makes much more sense than labeling every gravel road out there.

Hopefully the more people that know about it the more roads will be added. How do we get this post (or a better one) shared to Truckyeah or Overland? Maybe then more people will find the website and add roads

Added to overland, you could email Andrew Collins at Andrew@jalopnik.com if you want to sent a tip his way.

If you know of more roads to add I suggest going to the site and adding them. You'll only make the experience better for everyone.

Well, not the head, but I can add you. Please keep any O&E posts and shares germane though.

I really want something like this for the UK. There’s a few well known off-roading venues up my way, basically fields with hillocks and challenges etc. built into them, but most ‘public’ tracks are protected by the Ramblers Association (no relation to RamblinRover) and as such specify no vehicles apart from access and/or forestry/agriculture. I’m desperate to try overlanding, I even have the perfect trailer! Boo hiss sad face :(

Hey you could always be the guy that introduces this website to the UK so more people contribute and you can find all the fun back roads!

I could probably spend days adding roads around my area, problem is that really none of them are interesting, there are a few that are interesting though so I’ll at least add those to start.

i looked around me and it all seemed to be paved stuff. The closest ones I could even see the double yellow lines.

Same, I’ll probably add a few interesting roads, but my biggest problem is that my area is smack dab in the middle of mid-west-grid-system-gravel-roads-everywhere. I could probably spend a day or so adding in every gravel road that I know. Problem is that most of them aren’t that interesting, I’ll at least start with the interesting ones.

It’s the same over here in Belgium: only pedestrians, bicycles, mopeds and maintenance/farm vehicles allowed on most of the tracks. *sad trombone*

I think sometimes the roads transition between paved and unpaved even if it is on the website

This is true. I’ll probably add a few, start with the interesting bunch though. And just to give you an idea, here’s a snippet of the area I’m from

Kinja'd!!!

This is just north of Sioux Falls SD, a good %80-%90 of those roads are gravel, and most of the eastern half of the state, and SW Minnesota/ NE Iowa, looks very much the same.

Damn pedecycleds. They get to have all the fun. What’s the point of the countryside if you can’t ruin it with a 4x4?

Ohh I see so gravel is more of a common way of life there than it is over here in the Midwest of Ohio

Very much so, gravel roads easily out number tar roads around here.

Looks like most of the marked roads are bike paths here in DFW.
I was able to add a road, then it wouldn’t let me add some of the OHV Park trails.

Really that sucks. Around me most of the roads are actual roads
